Summary
Hand-arm vibration is vibration transmitted into the hands and arms of a person using handheld powered work equipment or stationary powered equipment which vibrates while being used. It can cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
HAVS affects the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints of the hand, wrist and arm. The hand and arm can become severely disabled if ignored and includes vibration white finger which can cause severe pain in the affected fingers. CTS is a nerve disorder which may involve pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in parts of the hand
Risks from vibration can be controlled and employees can be protected from ill health caused by vibration. Employers have a duty to comply with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.
